Full range of services specially designed for teens and young adults are available at Mind Therapy Clinic:
Our Outpatient Program for Teens and Young Adults is an effective bridge for clients after discharge from an intensive outpatient or partial day program and before fully independent participation in work, school, and family. Treatment begins with a thorough psychiatric evaluation and is supplemented by neuropsychological, diagnostic and laboratory testing as appropriate. A comprehensive treatment plan is carefully developed to address biological, psychological, psychosocial, nutritional and family issues. Mind Therapy Clinic provides a wide range of services for each stage of recovery for teens and their families.
You know your teen is doing drugs. What should you do? This is a difficult question because some experimentation with drugs is common in our culture. If your teen is regularly doing drugs and alcohol, they may need help, particularly if their behavior is affected.
The addiction to drugs is growing in leaps and bounds and has become a dangerous part of the teenage world. Teenagers are trying to find their own escape from individual issues related to family as well as relational issues. The effects of drugs on the brain are also dangerous especially to a young mind. The brain will crave to have more drugs into the system to satisfy the feeling of being high. This is when dependency on the drugs sets in.
Because drug and alcohol abuse may be a symptom of underlying psychiatric problems that should be addressed, it is imperative to seek help if you suspect addiction. Further, continued alcohol and drug use will affect your teen's behavior, attitudes and even choice of friends. Here are some signs to look for, if you think that your teen may be using:
Most teenagers go through normal mood swings. But look for extreme changes -- one minute happy and giddy followed by withdrawal, depression, or fits of anger or rage.
If your teen is using, chances are he will begin hanging out with others with similar interests. Has your child suddenly turned away from his old friends? Is he hanging out with an older (driving age) group or with those that you suspect are using drugs?
Has your teen's attitude toward school suddenly changed? Have his grades gone from pretty good to very bad? Has he been skipping classes or school altogether?
Have you noticed a change in appetite? Does your teen suddenly have digestive problems. Has he been treated for medical conditions that might be attributed to substance abuse, like gastritis or ulcers? Have his sleeping patterns changed?
Have you notice any alcoholic beverages missing? How about the medicine cabinet? Anything missing there? Have you found unexplained empty containers around the house or grounds? Any paraphernalia? Has he suddenly started smoking cigarettes openly?
Has your teen developed a negative attitude against anti-drug or anti-alcohol programs, materials or literature? Has he been in trouble with the law for any reason? Has he developed a bad attitude toward any authority figures in his life? Have you found that your child has generally become dishonest about things?
Have you noticed a change in hairstyle or "fashion" choices? Is he suddenly using breath mints constantly? Has he lost interest in tidiness in his room or does he pay less attention to personal hygiene?
Has anyone ever told you your teen is drinking or using drugs? Do you know that he has "experimented." Has he suddenly developed the need for additional money, for vague or unexplained reasons? Have you ever seen him stagger? Or have you noticed any slurred speech? Changes in the pupils of his eyes, or redness or bloodshot eyes?
It is especially important to know that some teens using drugs and alcohol may be suffering from psychiatric disorder and addiction problem.

Find out how Mind Therapy Clinic can help
Today's generation of young adults faces unprecedented challenges in separating from family and developing their own identity. Complicating matters is the uncertain and unpredictable economic climate into which young adults are attempting to launch themselves. Parents, despite their best intentions, are unable to drive this process once it becomes stuck--though they labor on through frustration and setbacks, unable to recognize they may lack the necessary developmental nutrients to help stuck young adults manage the process. "Lack of motivation," "resistance," and "entitlement" are commonly applied labels which seek to explain a very complicated and trying state of affairs that will need to be addressed on multiple levels in order to obtain solutions or relief.
At MindTherapy Clinic we work with young and adults and their families for whom this transitional period has been made more difficult when the young adult has experienced any of the following:
At the family system level, we start with an examination of the strengths of the members and the emotional resources available to the system itself. We then explore the beliefs, expectations, and narratives that hold members in interactive patterns that often reinforce the "stuckness." At the same time, we shift responsibility for the stuck young adult's lifestyle and choices back onto him or her while simultaneously challenging the parents and other involved family members to examine and shift their roles, responses, and behaviors.
